01 - Flying Lessons
'Winking cats and frisky bats, where did I put those flying helmets?' Miss Strega wondered.
On Jessica's tenth birthday, she discovers that she is a witch and starts her flying lessons with Miss Strega.
02 - Spelling Trouble
"Moonrays and marrowbones, Jessica, please pay attention!"
Jessica's first Spelling Lesson is going horribly wrong. Miss Strega is trying to teach her Transformation Spells, using the Wand method, but she's in such a grump that Jessica can't seem to do anything right.
03 - Charming or What
"That's it," declared Miss Strega, massaging her feet. "I'm not going another step. The girl has vanished."
04 - Brewing Up
"Let's take to the sky!"
Jessica and Miss Strega are flying off to the WitchesMarket to stock up on all the witchy things Miss Strega sells in her hardware shop. They have to collect all the usual things like Gnats' Spittle and Goats' Droppings, and with the help of the Dragon Dentist and the Odd Sock Witch, they pick up lots of new ideas too!
05 - Broomstick Battles
"Moonrays and Marrowbones, Jessica!" Miss Strega said. "Haven't you heard of the Broomstick Battles?"
Jessica and her teacher, Miss Strega, Spell Backwards in time to see just how the Broomstick Battles began when witches worldwide fell out about the right way to fly a broom. She decides to do a project on the legendary founder of the Modern Broom, Dame Walpurga of the Blessed Warts, and finds a talking book to help her. That's when the trouble starts.
06 - Witch Switch
"Prrrroom," Jessica purred, in a very pleased voice. "I'm a cat."
Jessica is learning the Witch Switchhow to magically change shape. But although being a cat can be great fun, it's also a tiny bit scary. What happens if a Switch goes wrong? And will the neighbours on the High Street finally discover the secret of Miss Strega's hardware shop?
07 - Moonlight Mischief
Jessica cheeks were blazing as she stirred and stirred and crissed and crossed her magic brew.
08 - The Last Task
"Miss Strega!" Jess yelled. "He's switched into a windmill again. Stop! Whoa!"
Jess is off on a quest to find the historic shoes of Dame Walpurga which have been stolen from the shoe museum in Coven Garden. But to carry out her task, she must tackle a rude giant, trick a grumpy gnome, uncover a secret hidden underground and find the thief.
Witches Who Made History:
It tells the story of how Dame Walpurga of the Blessed Warts created the Modern Witch's Right-Way-Up broom and how her invention led to Broomstick Battles with the Wrong-Way-Uppers, the witches who still rode their brooms the old-fashioned way.
This story first appeared in Midnight Feast, a collection of stories to raise money for War Child and No Strings who work all around the world to help children in countries devastated by war and poverty.
